Urban pollinator mix

For the second year in a row Peterborough City Council has sown an urban pollinator mix on the Thorpe Road roundabout, just a few minutes away from our house. I meant to photograph it last year, but never quite found the right time. This morning was sunny and calm, and being a Sunday there was very little traffic, so I went off early to grab a few shots.

It's quite hard to capture the dazzling confection of colour - and the camera certainly can't capture the honeyed smell of the Sweet Alison or the buzzing of the bees and hoverflies that were visiting.

The informal beauty of these annual flowers is certainly a great improvement on the neat rows of bedding plants that used to be grown, all of which which required regular weeding and watering, and whose double flowers provided very limited nectar or pollen.
