When is a garden not a garden . . .

. . .  when it's Little Sparta! This garden was our last of the tour, after visiting the lovely gardens at Portmore during the morning. The former home of artist Ian Hamilton Finlay, Little Sparta at Stonypath is full of his artistic creations, most of them inscribed with mottoes and wise words. I don't want to be cynical, but a lot of it was over my head. Don't go here if you're after horticulture (go to Portmore) - there are planted areas of course and a lot of natural vegetation, but it's the art which visitors come for.

It's a half-mile walk from the car park too and the garden is only open on certain days. My Americans loved it however and I managed to persuade the caretaker lady to bring her car down to transport the less able folk up the hill.

Interesting.
