If you can't beat them...

Bamford Crusher.

A quiet morning with a couple of fairly notable (well for me notable) ornithological observations.  The first a Robin managing to feed from the hanging feeders.  I haven't seen that before.  The second a visit from a Nuthatch, common place to many but they only visit us every few months and 30-40 years ago there weren't any in the county.

When Clickychick got in from the studio at lunch she suddenly expressed a desire to visit the water mill at Little Salkeld.   So off we went.  We had been many many years ago but I had forgotten exactly what it was like.  Two water wheels both overshot however only one was turning.  A lovely little cafe and shop plus for a very small fee the entrance to wander round inside the mill itself and watch the goings on.

The Bamford Crusher is I suspect what I would call a hammer mill and is probably used for making the oat meal rather than any of the flour making processes.  The mill (or its predecessors) has been in the Eden Valley at Little Salkeld since just after the Scot's 45 rebellion.
