St Eulalie
I dropped Mrs TT and a friend off at a Taisé singing workshop in Fuilla and went for a walk. The church was open and there were two musicians practicing as this is the week of the annual Rotja valley festival. I remembered the church contains 15th century naive wooden sculptures so I went in. The seven characters are: the body of Christ; Saint Joseph of Arimathea wearing the ritual cap; St. John the Evangelist with his gospel in his right hand and the four women including the Virgin Mary, probably the one carrying the shroud or a handkerchief, and St. Mary Magdalene holding a vase of perfume against her breast. The statues were discovered during the restoration of the church in the west window of the northern aisle behind a brick wall by the Abbot Cazes. An inventory of the possessions of the parish in 1866 indicates an altar of the Holy Sepulchre with seven statues described as 'ridiculous.' It can be assumed that it was a former curate of Fuilla who was responsible for the disappearance of these statues by walling them up.
