Born to run
I look at the soles of my shoes more often than you might expect. Most days I give them a polish before I go out, which I do at the dining room table, so I always check they're clean before I put them down. The soles of my running shoes I check less often but for some reason I did today and I think it might be time to get a new pair.
I used to change my running shoes every few hundred miles as recommended - UNSURPRISINGLY - by the running shoe industry. And then I read Christopher McDougall's excellent 'Born To Run'. If you're remotely interested in running, I'd highly recommend it. The relevant part of the book, with regard to running shoes, is that there are (I think) 27 sensors in each of your feet and these tell you how to position your ankles, knees, hips, et cetera.
So, wearing padded running shoes 'muffles' the information your feet require to feedback to the rest of your body. In the book McDougall states a direct correlation between how expensive your running shoes are to how likely you are to have a running injury. For a long time now, since reading the book, I've just bought a cheap, comfortable pair of shoes and run in those. And I've never had an injury.
