Viking Ship Museum

Last week we visited the Jelling Stones, which is on UNESCO's world heritage list. This inspired me to visit Roskilde Cathedral today, which is also inscribed on the world heritage list. It is a unique and beautiful medieval cathedral. The Viking king Harold Bluetooth (who also raised the larger of the two Jelling stones) and his son, Sweyn Forkbeard (d. 1014) conqueror of England are buried here along with almost 40 other kings and queens of Denmark. After having seen the cathedral and walked the dogs in the center of Roskilde, we drove to the harbour to see the Viking Ship Museum. I left the boys in the car and went inside to see the the oldest part of the museum, the Viking Ship Hall,  which is constructed as a showcase around five Viking ships, found in Roskilde Fjord. 

The rest of the museum is mainly outdoors, so I could collect the boys from the car and take them with me. It was an interesting afternoon. I enjoyed the history lessons around the museum and the boys enjoyed lots of cuddles from the other turists :-)
