So intricate

We were planning to go to Highgate cemetery today, but with the promised rain arriving early I am so glad we didnt in the end.
Instead we went to look at a couple of fairly local churches, trying to find inspiration for Cleo's A level art project.
This rather beautiful carved memorial  of 'exceptional quality' sits on the south wall of the Covert chapel in Slaugham church, and depicts Sir Richard Covert with his seven sons and facing east, behind which is his wife Ann (Hendly) his wife, and his seven daughters (also facing east) and behind them Cicely (Bowes) his second wife. Richard and his second, third and forth son are depicted in military costume - his first son being shown as a child as he probably died in childhood.  Carved around 1579  by a sculptor called Flynton at a cost of £30 it shows amazing detail, and is an interesting insight into life at that time.
Well wort seeing if you are ever that way.
I have added a shot in extras of Rosie musing on the beautiful Kempe window in Turner's hill church, the other church we visited.
