inspired by a broken window
We caught the 555 to Rydal this morning and walked along the coffin road to Grasmere. This was the route used by mourners carrying the bodies their loved ones from Ambleside to Grasmere church before Ambleside church was built.
It must have been an exhausting journey, but we were able to travel unencumbered with such heavy burdens. The sun shone all the way and my camera was working overtime. I could have chosen any one of a dozen images for my blip - Rydal Hall, herdwick sheep, a money tree, a coffin rest or autumn trees.
After a lunch break in Grasmere, we walked up the hill to Allan Bank for another look round this empty National Trust property where Wordsworth had once lived with his family. We wandered into a derelict building which had once been a billiard room but was known as the chapel because of its recycled church windows. The sun was shining through the amber coloured glass and filtering mistily through the broken window panes. Encroaching brambles gave it a whimsical, fairytale quality.
This has to be the one to remind me of a lovely Autumn day in the Lakes.
