Calais morning

We started the morning, French-style with ‘petit dejeuner’ in a bar by the Place D’Armes. Then we wandered through the market, which was just getting going, and bought a range of fruit and vegetables to take home. We even managed a visit to the wonderful Fromagerie, before heading for the ferry.

The rather bizarre sight of a larger than life Charles de Gaulle and his wife stepping through the market is one of several additions to the Place D’Armes during its refurbishment. Apparently he married Yvonne Vendroux in Calais in 1921, as this was her home town. And wasn’t it de Gaulle who said 'How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?' How can you choose from so many is what we would say.

Then it was the long drive home, stopping off eventually at Tingley Bar Fisheries, Morley. We were dismayed to find the café closed, although the shop was open. And in true Yorkshire-style, they opened the café just for us.

Now home, we are amazed thinking what we have done in just a few days. Not terribly exciting things, but very enjoyable nevertheless. And that’s us for the summer. We will be staying more or less put during August, as usual, so avoiding the traffic and crowds during the summer holidays. Lots of things to get on with here at home.
