Martin Mere WWT
We were off up to Preston for the weekend to visit relatives. We have membership to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust so decided to go to Martin Mere WWT, near Preston, on our way up there.
We were expecting both the roads (M6) and the Centre to be busy as it was the first weekend of the school holidays. We were pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic and people! Great, especially as we'd got so far when I realised I left my camera bag with essential items - phone, camera, etc.... at home. SO we had to retrace our journey and start again!
We spent 5 blissful hours at Martin Mere. We watched a barn owl hunting by day. There were many butterflies and dragonflies. I think the one in the extras is a Black Tailed Skimmer but I'm not entirely sure? We even got a glimpse of a kingfisher and watched a hare tear off at speed. It's usually a place to see the spectacle of incoming winter geese and swans but it was just as good at this time of the year.
They have Asiatic Otters at the centre and they'd just been fed when we saw them. Just look at those whiskers!!
