Not exactly knitting

Behold the handiwork of my final year students!

This is the best that they could do in my knitting exercise. Thank goodness this skill is not tested in the final exam ;-)

Each year I start this class by giving the students an option for the tutorial task, which at this point is unspecified. They can either:

(a) work with another student with a handout to help, or
(b) work alone at the front with me hovering nearby

Of course they all want the handout, so the first few to say so get printed instructions on how to knit, plus a pair of needles with the wool already cast on. Then I leave them to it. Those not so quick off the mark get their own sets of needles plus lots of help in person from me. Of course those working as individuals without the handout always fare best in this challenge due to the personal attention offered to them.

The point of all this is to demonstrate to the class members the difference between information (such as printed instructions on a handout) and knowledge (in the form of mentoring from an expert). The task helps set the scene for my final year module in Knowledge (NB not information) Management.
