The Appian way

Our hosts recommended a trip to Matera to visit the "sassi". These are cave dwellings carved into the rock on both sides of a steep ravine. Half of Matera's population were still living in these caves in the early 1950's. These caves are an extraordinary sight, not only are there "houses" but churches (chiesi rupestri) carved out of the cliffside, decorated with frescoes. The area is now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
On the way home we were advised to follow a very picturesque route which was actually part of the Appian Way. Choice of picture for today was difficult but the shots of the "sassi" weren't great so I opted for the countryside shot while I tried to imagine Roman legions treading the same path.
