Induction activities for new students

We held a couple of fun activities for our new students today, mainly to get them working with each other and, more importantly, talking to each other.

One of the activities involved the students working in teams to construct a tower capable of holding an orange. They were only allowed to use newspaper and sellotape to achieve this. The winning structure was supposed to be the tallest one capable of supporting the weight. Most of the finished structures were about 3 metres high but as soon as the orange was placed on top they simply collapsed. In the end, the winning structure was only about 1.5 metres tall, but it comfortably supported the weight.

This photograph shows one team busily constructing a very elegant looking tower, which sadly did not meet the requirements of the brief and buckled under the weight of the orange.
