Svanen

OK you've seen a wind turbine before, but have you seen what they use to install and repair them?

May I introduce you to HLV Svanen. HLV stands for Heavy Lift Vessel - this one is one of the biggest in the world, weighing in at 8,700 tonnes! It is owned by a Dutch company called Ballast Nedam and it has also been used to build a number of bridges including the one which stretches across the Great Belt of the Baltic which is part of the road from Denmark to Sweden. It has also been used in Canada and Saudi Arabia, so it gets about.

Here I think they are installing an experimental direct-drive turbine for Siemens and Dong energy. It will have the world's largest rotor blade at 154 metres diameter and will be able to produce 6MW of electricity.
