Playing trains again
Today we took the train from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge using the narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol line. This line was opened in 1902 to serve lead mines, the timber industry and tourism. In 1913 it was amalgamated with Cambrian Railways which in turn became part of the Great Western Railway in 1922. It was nationalised in 1948 and eventually became the only steam operated line on British Railways in 1968. It was privatised in 1989. The line climbs from near sea level to 639ft and its latter stages wind through continuous sharp curves at a tough gradient along a rocky ledge cut into the hillside. They have three old 2-6-2T engines named Owain Glendwr, Llewelyn and Prince of Wales, which pulled us today.
Back home again now so I will try to catch up with all your journals.
