Grafton Station

Well; not the station itself, obviously. However, this structure is at the top of the steps down to the station platforms. The station itself lacked any real photogenicity, so I bit the bullet, and produced yet another sunrise picture.

Before the Rugby World Cup was held in Auckland a year ago, the suburban rail system in Auckland underwent substantial upgrading. The western line was a single track, and that resulted in delays, as well as an infrequent service. Double tracking was undertaken all the way out west.

The stations were upgraded, and some (like this one) were added, or moved, and the bizarre process of backing and shunting at Newmarket was ended by moving the tracks.

All this work produced a rail system that was popular during the World Cup, and has remained relatively so for commuters. This particular station is easily within walking distance of the Auckland City Hospital, and the adjacent School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
