A Tribute to Commerce?
This is one of three sconces for the enormous chandeliers which hang in the "old" Commerce Court (the North building) in downtown Toronto. It is quite an ostentatious lobby, with a heavily gilded ceiling and marble throughout.
For eleven years I worked next door in the more modern West tower. I remember a partner I worked with commenting how "wonderful" it was that such a grand monument to commerce as the North Tower was completed during the Great Depression. Not sure I concur at a sociopolitical level, but it did make a convenient and dry blip on a day which has been very trying as my purse was snatched on the evening train yesterday with all of the hassles and delays that entails.
Perhaps if there had been a bit more "prudence" on my part, or "integrity" on someone else's, there could have been more "industry" and "commerce" to my day.
Oh well, tomorrow is hump day.
