Diary of an Edinburgher

Norway Day Nine

Left Oslo at 8.30am and arrived at our destination, Flåm, about 5pm. We had a stopover at Myrdal station, which was quite picturesque. It really is this GREEN Just time for a picnic lunch, and some of the group walked down to the river. The station was mobbed with mountain bikers, who hire the bikes, cycle down the zig zag roads to sea level, and take the train back up.

It was a grand scenic journey, an amazing achievement, building all those tunnels by hand. At one point, we stopped and got out to take photos of a huge waterfall, when suddenly there was weird warbling, and a woman in red came and danced around up on the rocks. I wasn't expecting her - why would I? So I didn't get a decent shot.

The usual carry on at the windows, with the iPad wielding fanatics pushing in, crossing from side to side in their quest to get a (probably) blurred photo of themselves in the window reflection.

Flåm is a cute wee place at the head of a fjord. It was absolutely mobbed, with a gigantic cruise ship just about in the town. We're in a rather nice hotel (they've all been excellent) with a wee outside seating bit. We had a wander, I accidentally bought a jacket, JR bought a bottle of tonic then we came back for a G&T (Rufus's mum had given us a couple of miniature bottles of gin for our suitcase) before dinner.

More trolls outside shops, but these ones had tails. I happened to mention this to a random man who was taking a photo of them and I got the whole story, in all seriousness, of how they got turned into mountains after exposure to sunlight. I had to include this Last Ever Troll, which had a sign stuck on his nose saying, ‘NO PHOTO PLEASE!' So of course, it had to be done.

Off to our final destination tomorrow by boat - Bergen.
