River Petterill (Part 3)
Not quite what I had planned to blip today! It is rather interesting though. This is one of many streams, which feed into the Petterill. From this point, it flows under the road and into the field at the other side and then into the river a little further on. This is where we parked in order to walk and I was taken with this old stone trough by the roadside. It is being fed through some old pipework from the stream. There are many of these still around and most likely they date from a time when horses were the main means of transport and needed places to stop for a drink.
What we were actually planning had nothing to do with troughs. I had this idea of going to the far side of Motherby and following a footpath down to the river where there is apparently a footbridge.
This venture did not quite go to plan!
We crossed the road and found the gate where the footpath sign was vaguely pointing and looked at the ground – the stream from across the road had more or less flooded the field, and made the footpath difficult to see under the mud.
Nevertheless, we thought we would give it a go. Then, just as we were going to open the gate . . . (see first extra) . . . and he wasn’t alone (see second extra). We decided that opening the gate was not such a good idea after all.
An attempt to find the path from the other side also failed. Oh dear! Never mind, I really like the stream and the stone trough.
Tomorrow we are going on a journey of a different kind – by train. And on Friday a much longer train journey. A good thing Gordon was able to collect some sunglasses from the optician today – I think he is going to need them!
