Raise a Million for Oor Kids

So I admit it, I'm a bit of a film buff with a particular penchant for either Mafia films or films with a "Happy Ending".

One of my favourite films, of all time, is Serendipity starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, which I would suggest you check out on a cold winters evening. Anyway if you check out the word Serendipity in the dictionary or internet you'll find definitions such as "the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way", or as I like to think about our good fortune in getting The Sunday Post as our 2013 Partner "a fortunate stroke of serendipity".

You see it was back in May of this year that the Kiltwalk Trustees decided it would be fantastic if we could get a world renowned, iconic Scottish figure involved in The Kiltwalk. We also decided it would make sense to bring a well respected Scottish institution on board and so we left that meeting, put on our thinking caps and got to work.

It was then a marvelous stroke of luck that we started 'tweeting' with Kenny Miller (no, not that one) who is a Sports Journalist with The Sunday Post, which led to an impromptu meeting at the end of the Hampden to Loch Lomond Kiltwalk. During our chat Kenny 'mentioned' their new Chief Editor was someone who might take more than a passing interest in The Kiltwalk.

Now I know a real journalist wouldn't reveal a source and I just did, however I think this was the start of our serendipity story and I couldn't let my story pass without thanking Kenny.

With dreams of The Broons taking part in a Kiltwalk we emailed a certain Donald Martin of DC Thomson and when he didn't respond, we politely harassed him again. After around four weeks of hearing nothing and just as we were about to give up, Donald got in touch apologizing for not getting back to us, it had been budget time you see, and expressed an interest in hearing more.

So we swapped a few emails and before we knew it we were meeting up in Edinburgh for a 'chat' and I have to say things could not have gone better.

You see unknown to us, The Sunday Post, a well respected Scottish institution, were looking for 'something big' in Scotland to get involved in and this more than fitted the bill. Before the night was out we were discussing all sorts of future plans, which we then formally put to Donald for consideration.

So that fellow Kiltwalkers is how The Kiltwalk had a fortunate stroke of serendipity in meeting up with The Sunday Post, which has resulted in our plan to raise a million pounds for Scotland's Children's Charities in 2013, with Oor Wullie, an iconic Scottish figure, leading the way.

There is a lot more news to come from The Kiltwalk and The Sunday Post however for just now let's all say thanks for "serendipity"
