Mt. St.Helens
Today was my sisters birthday. We drove up to Mt. St. Helens, where we had not been in years. It erupted in 1980, taking the lives of 57 people. In the main blip Helena is at the monument commemorating the lost lives, among them Harry Truman, an elderly man who refused to evacuate his home on the mountain; David Johnston, a 30-year old volcanologist, who was stationed up on the mountain monitoring its activity and two Russian loggers who survived the initial blast, but died of the burns days later.
We stopped at two of the three visitors centers up there. At the Johnston Ridge Observatory you can see right into the blown away part of the mountain, and the newly forming cone there. The exhibits and videos were very informative.
In the extra John and Helena mark the day - 66
