Wentworth Woodhouse
Tuesday 13th June 2017 (1753)
Time to leave our Spa hotel. I was too tired for a swim this morning. We were booked on a tour of Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest privately owned house in Europe. In April it was sold to the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust.
It's actually made up of two houses of different architectural styles, the first house was baroque and is now the West front shown above, now the back of the house. It was then extended to add the East front and rooms (now the front) in the palladian style, which looks very grand. I would have posted my picture of the front but Mum took hers in a wonderful panorama showing the full extent of it, which put my photo to shame! So our two photos together show, as the guide described it, the grandest back to back house in the country.
Unfortunately the house is in need of major repair, hence having been bought by the trust, and most of the furniture has recently been removed. It has recently been used for filming by the BBC and ITV. The history was interesting and we also had a walk through the gardens. With a tremendous amount of money and restoration it would be a wonderful place.
After the tour Christmas was over and we said goodbye to my brother and sister-in-law. We've had a lovely few days together. Mum and I travelled back to Leeds for a relaxing evening.
