But things are looking up.  

It's amazing how much difference a cabin hook for the shed door, a little cupboard for the bottom of the stairs and sockets with USB ports make. 

Also:  found a new barber.  She was suspicious, because when she found out how long I had worked in the same place she wondered why I had never been before.  I had a complex explanation relating to Bernie having retired 5 years ago and my never having settled down after that.  I think I've now used every one within 500 metres, which is quite a lot.
