Lying in a little wooded valley is the old ruined Temple Kirk which dates from the 12th century and is all that remains of an abbey founded by the Templars on lands gifted by David I of Scotland in 1127. The Templars were founded as a religious order of knights to protect Christians in the Holy Land during the Crusades. (Extra)
One of the gravestones besides the ruins is that of John Craig who farmed nearby at Outerstoun and died in 1742 aged 68. He is shown wearing a long coat with many buttons, a bonnet, scarf and boots which must have been his special clothes for going to church. Besides him are two small boys presumably his sons. The inscription on the back mentions his son William but I was unable to read the rest.
