After walking along the woodland paths around Hopetoun House it was good to escape from the bitterly cold wind into the warmth of the house.  One of the things that I found particularly interesting was this musical automaton which performed a tune as the clock struck the hour.  It was made in Amsterdam around 1730 and as the tune is being played the sails of the windmill go round while the musicians move their arms as they play their instruments.
