First Day

The city has been very excitedly sharing sneak peeks of the fountains that have been installed in the centre. It's right at the heart of many of the City of Culture events - it's where The Blade installation was, where the poppies of The Weeping Window were. And now it's home to the fountain. Given the weather, we decided we should go quite early if we were going to get to see them without lots of people. Then we remembered that she had a workshop in the city today so we could enjoy it during opening weekend. We arrived shortly after 8am. She played for nearly an hour on her own, apart from two happy cockerpoos who decided to join her. Around 815 the sound system kicked in, so she had music to dance and splash to. A wonderful start to the day!

Once she was dry, we spent a little time getting some new summer bits she needed before we went to music centre. We then had a fabulous morning at the Orchestra in a Day workshop. Sadly, lots of people who'd booked didn't come - possibly because of the gorgeous weather - but the ones who did were very up for being involved. Katie was the entire woodwind section on her own, but she was so confident and it didn't matter one bit. We (I was in the chorus) had a great time composing two new pieces. The second one was particularly lovely to listen to the musicians. They sounded great. Katie's band teacher heads up these Saturday workshops and she was really pleased to have Katie there.

We went back into the centre to finish the jobs, though we got distracted by Lush. The lady said she could choose a bathbomb as a tester. She picked a bright sparkly pink one. In the small bowl full of water, it was brilliant. But it also dyed her hands sparkly pink! She thinks its very funny. We got the car and went to do the last few bits - school uniform all sorted ready for after half term now! We shared a happy meal in the instore MacDonalds at Asda and headed back home. She tried on the bits that she'd not already tried on then went off to dance and stretch in the new dance vests I'd bought her. She came back and asked if she could do some make up on herself. She popped back again with quite well done sparkly eye make up and a reasonable amount of gloss. I heard her laughing away and she returned with her face covered in blusher.

When her wee face was no longer bright pink, though still sparkly-eyed, she did some clarinet before a bit of piano as I made tea. Shrek is on now as she has a quiet half hour before bed.

A good first day of the holidays!
