Able Tasman National Park #4
...the home stretch! We had a great over-night stay at the Awapoto Hut last night, (not taking into account the nasty black flies) the best facitlity we have come across so far. The hiking has remained quite gruelling, even my sweetheart has started to wonder if my knees will get me to the finish line, they have doubled in size. There's no such thing as a light and variable path here; it's either straight up or straight down, climbing on huge tree roots, fording some streams, climbing over fallen beech or rata trees. But then we came to Pigeon Saddle, then Gibbs Pass which was a little relief, and then the home stretch widened and tapered to a comfortable downward trail, straight to the incecessantly blue waters of the sea.
