In the Pink
Another day, another bicycle. This pink monstrosity attached to railings on the estate was hung last week with a placard saying 'Lock it or Lose it', a warning to students about securing their bikes. However the only thing that has gone awol is the placard.
With hundreds of bicycles parked around this area, I imagine any normal locking chain would offer little protection against a pair of duty bolt cutters, a profitable accessory for any aspiring bike thief.
Still, it might provide some resistance.
The other side of the coin is the number of bicycles which do remained tethered with flat tyres and rusting chains to railings. They must belong to students who have lost the padlock keys. Gradually over the months after the wheels have been stolen or deliberately bent out of shape, they become a source of spare parts until all that is left is a bare frame and a loose chain dangling onto the pavement.
Not this bike though, it will stay pink and safe - who would have it!
