Burrow Mump

We stopped off on the way to Taunton this morning for a quick sprint up Burrow Mump between the showers.

The ruined church of St Michael's was built in the late 18 C to replace the original Medieval one, but didn't last long itself (I imagine the congregation didn't fancy the steep climb!) and soon fell into disrepair.

Both Burrow & Mump mean "hill" so the name literally translates as Hill Hill! It has long been used as a fortification and vantage point, for the Celts against the Romans and King Alfred against the Danes; the Normans built a small motte on it. It was also occupied by Royalists during the English Civil War after they suffered a drubbing at the hands of the New Model Army at nearby Langport.

We were on our way to Taunton to investigate having our bathroom re-designed, then we stopped to buy bedding plants and have lunch at a nearby garden centre.

Back to Keep Fat tonight after another 3 week break, so anticipating it being hard work again.
