Blackland (Sunday May 7th 2017)

Sometime in the early nineties I went on a guided tour of Blacklands Mill, a corn mill in Blackland on the outskirts of Calne. It had recently been restored and was producing wholewheat flour. If I recall correctly the weather was poor and the interior dark, and I took no pictures.

I did return there with a camera in 2010 and got a couple of pictures of the nineteen-foot mill wheel. My Blip of that day was not of Blacklands Mill but of a horse I found in the stables of the adjacent Mill Farm, called Crunchy. I have now added a picture of the mill wheel from that day as an Extra on that Blip.

The settlement at Blackland dates from the twelfth century, when it was known as Lower Greensand, and the mill has been on the present site since 1728, rebuilt c. 1800. Milling ceased between 1915-20 but had been restored in 1982-83 and was in use again until 1993. The main building has more recently been extensively renovated but the mill wheel stands idle.

There are pictures of a horse at the farm and of Blacklands Mill in the Flickr album. My Blip shows the old mill race that lies behind the mill building on the River Marden, but it has been diverted from the mill wheel.

This week's choice from Cerys Matthews' 6 Music show is Lee Perry's production of Millie Jackson's hit It Hurt So Good. Lee Perry used bassist Boris Gardiner and the Zap Pow horns on his arrangement, but was released to  little acclaim in Jamaica. When released in the UK on DIP International, however, it topped the UK Reggae Charts and was picked up by the Magnet label. She flew to London to promote the single, and appeared on Top of the Pops.
It turns out that Millie Jackson's version was not the original as it was first recorded in 1971 by Katie Love and the Four Shades of Black on the Muscle Shoals Sound label. Millie Jackson's hit version was featured in the film Cleopatra Jones in 1973.
