Hutton Roof

A bank holiday! A day with Dan and Abi!

Not so fast.

Dan and Abi are both pretty witty kids and when their forces are focussed in concert on a single target - e.g. me - they can be very funny indeed. So over the weekend I'd enjoyed a tongue in cheek performance of them pretending to feel sorry for how misguided I was as they explained they both had plans for the bank holiday Monday.

Abi's plans included a requirement for me to drop her off at a friend's house in Hutton Roof, which I did by detour en route to Chorley and a walk along the canal. As I pulled up, I saw this old AA sign by the side of the road. I can't remember seeing any others anywhere at anytime. Maybe someone had the job of collecting them all and this one was missed. I love how it's weathering and I wonder how long it will be here for.

From this point, Lupton and Burton in Kendal are in opposite directions. I wonder whether, when these signs were common currency, everyone simply understood that the top destination was if you turned to your left from looking at the sign, and the lower one was rightwards? And whether anyone really cared how far it was to London from this remote hamlet, which I can't imagine was ever on any sensible route to the capital.
