Birds Nest Fungi
Today was only semi-successful.
I knocked off work at 3 and headed out to Talbot Forest to look for more orange pore fungi. I didn't find any.
I did find plenty of other fungi, but hadn't remembered a ground sheet and wasn't prepared to lie full length in the mud to get decent photos - though I probably would have sacrificed if I'd found the orange pore fungi.
Fortunately I did find birds nest fungi at a level that didn't require getting too low. These wee 'nests' fascinate me. I had never seen them before some of our Motueka blippers blipped them last year. If it wasn't for their blips I'd never have know what they were when I did see them - proof that blip not only entertains, it also educates!
Apparently there are five genera of these Nidulariaceae to be found in New Zealand, but I've only seen this one which is of the genera crucibulum. I now also have my eyes peeled for the other 4 genera.
NOTE: Thank you all so much for sending yesterday's piwakawaka to the Popular page. I wasn't aware that it was there until J pointed it out to me - thanks J :-)
