Criss Cross

A mini tour of other parts of the island today. First stop a bit further north is the tiny, beautiful church. It appears to be carved out of a big bit of rock. In the door a cross is carved out and we close it over to let the light in shine in and make its mark on the stone floor. The tiny churches are built all over the island as a memorial, each has its own festival day, like the people whose festival day is akin to, and more important than our British notion of a birthday. I also learned that when people die and are buried, once 'all the meat is gone', the bones are removed and washed and stored compactly, but not underground. They are stored somewhere, I didn't ask where.

We criss-crossed over the island through the pine forest to the bay at Atsitsa where I was too distracted to take a pic by the excellent homemade carrot cake and lemonade on offer.
