Tentmakers market

A visit to the Museum of Islamic Art was followed by a visit to the Tentmakers Market, just around the corner.

The Museum was badly damaged in 2014 in a bombing, targeting a police/court building opposite. I remember the bombing, and remember thinking how disappointed I was that I wouldn't see this Museum. Well, I've stayed longer than I ever thought I would and it's recently been reopened so I spent more than two hours looking at glass objects, tiles, carvings, bowls, carpets, ornaments and surgical instruments, among other things, many dating back to the 8th century.

Well worth the wait.

Then onto the Tentmakers Market, walking through bustling ancient streets. Ramadan lanterns and tablecloths are now on sale for Ramadan is just over a month away. I've always admired this design at the market so bought the wall hanging. I'd only gone to buy cushion covers for a friend....

Nice memories nevertheless.

The day concluded at Fishawy, a famous tea place in Khan el Khalili, the big bazaar. Popular with both locals and tourists, it was a nice way to finish the day.

Then a micro bus ride and a bus ride and walk and I was home in quiet, calm Zamalek. The markets are fun, but chaotic and you need to keep your wits about you dodging people, motorbikes, tuk Turks, children, beggars...
