The Drumlanrig Sycamore
Today's the day .......................... to be large
The Drumlanrig Sycamore in the parkland surrounding Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries & Galloway is over 300 years old - and is the largest in Britain.
Although they are now found throughout many woods, parks and gardens, sycamores are not native to Britain but are thought to have been introduced from mainland Europe by the Romans. Here are some fascinating facts about this one -
Trunk: 23ft (7.06m) girth and a diameter of 7.4ft (2.23m)
Crown: 103ft(31.5m) high
Volume of timber: 883 cubic feet (25 cu m)
Canopy: covers one third of an acre
Estimated water consumption/pa: 134,000 gallons
So you can see that it's pretty big.
Meanwhile, Tessa was more interested in playing on the swings .....................
