More Culture

backblip

Thanks to the generosity of our hosts who gave up their tickets for us, Mom and I went to a phenomenal symphony performance. In a most beautiful building. How lucky am I???

The conference was just dandy today, the teaching institute. I heard a fantastic talk by a cultural psychologist. I remember one thing that was very relevant to my current life circumstances, as a resident of a Southern US state, and a faculty in an institution of higher learning with a large African-American population. In Black-White interactions, Blacks strive to be, first and foremost, respected; Whites strive, first and foremost, to be liked. Sometimes these separate goals, when not met, result in frustration and feelings of communication break-down. I made a mental note, and intend to act accordingly, though I don't exactly know what I mean by that.
