Tall Ships Festival, Greenwich

Spoilt for choice today and I still can't decide which shot I like best. So I've uploaded them all to Flickr. The shot I finally settled on was chosen as it contrasted the old and the new. The old sailing ship and the new Thames Clipper against the background of Canary Wharf.

The Festival takes place at two locations in Greenwich - on Greenwich Reach in front of the Old Navy College and at Woolwich Arsenal. On Greenwich Reach the boats were moored mid-stream but we were able to watch a procession motoring and sailing up and down the river. Greenwich has always been an important place in maritime history and today gave an indication of what it may have been like in the past when sailing ships were the norm.

From Greenwich the ships will be sailing to Canada after the Easter Weekend as part of the RDV Celebrations marking the 150th birthday of the Canadian nation arriving in Quebec towards the beginning of September.

There was plenty going on along the banks of the Thames too. Music and entertainment, displays, demonstrations and exhibitions and plenty to eat too. The weather was kind if a little cool and the tide was high, splashing the walkways and nearly inundating the Trafalgar pub.

We left the car up in Greenwich Park and walked through the park to the waterfront. That in itself was lovely, enjoying a jacket potato at the Park Pavillion. All in all, a grand day out. The extras show work all done with the aid of safety equipment!
