Perspective
This painting by Joseph Milne of St John's Kirk fills the window of a redundant shop in Perth's High Street. I thought it would be interesting to compare it with the same view of Kirkgate today.
I don't think it is possible to match the artist's perspective. From this point it isn't possible to see the building fronts. Any closer and the roof line of the buildings rises above the tower. I suppose he could have sketched the scene from the top of a step ladder. I had to squash my photo a little too; in reality the tower is taller.
Time hasn't been kind to Kirkgate. Some of the buildings have gone, and despite linking the High Street to St Johns Place, it has a neglected air. Children don't play in the street either.
