Wemyss cliffs

I spent some time with my spiritual director in Anstruther today reviewing the diary for the last six months. Last time I did that I almost had a heart attack, this time wasn't as bad, although I've clearly been busy.

I had stopped on the way in East Wemyss where there was an earthcache at the caves here. The cliffs are formed from Old Red Sandstone, laid down by rivers in the Devonian period. You can see cross-bedding in the cliff face.

The sandstone erodes easily and forms caves which have been used for hundreds of years as doocots. There are some pigeons in the photo, and the caves have carved square boxes for nesting. There is evidence of human habitation for thousands of years and of the use as doocots for hundreds of years.
