Lovage

These are some of the seed heads from our Lovage plant. We have had lovage in our gardens since we went to a restaurant in Marlborough called The Loaves and Fishes many, many years ago; I wonder if it still there? I ate avocado and lovage mousse and we have had lovage in the garden ever since.
Lovage is a hardy perennial herb belonging to the same family as angelica and carrot. Although lovage has been grown in English gardens and Monastery gardens for hundreds of years, it is not a native plant. It originates from the Mediterranean. It has been cultivated since the time of Pliny (23-79AD). It was used a good deal as a herbal remedy for sore throats as well as an aphrodisiac.
One good use is to steep a big bunch of leaves in boiling water and leave for 2 or 3 hours. Then use the liquid in a bath, it is very relaxing.
