Major sporting venue

A visit to Ramsbottom today.  This view of Bridge Street includes the Oaks pub which, as is well known, is the venue for the annual World Black Pudding Throwing Championships.  I will be visiting another major venue tomorrow.

Ramsbottom is a very pleasant little town with sculpture, an excellent small brewery, a theatre and numerous independent shops.

Some people snigger at the name of the place. The earliest recorded reference to "Ramsbottom" was in the 14th Century. There are three theories of the origin of the name:

1. Valley bottom where rams graze.
2. Valley bottom where wild garlic ("ramsons") grow.
3. At the huts of herders of rams.
