Back to the mural..

I'm not going to go round every panel of the Peebles Mural, but being back in the area today (dental hygienist) I thought it worth showing this detail.

The man with the book is Mungo Park (1771-1805), who was born in the Borders and worked as a surgeon in Peebles from his surgery on the Northgate.   He was a missionary in Nigeria and was the first Westerner to see the source of that great river.   Park drowned in the river while his party was under attack from hostile locals.

My great-grandmother's sister married a nephew of Mungo.

At the bottom of the picture, the bearded man is David Ritchie, the Black Dwarf of Manor Valley.
