Davy Lamps, Beamish Museum

A day spent at Beamish Museum is informative, entertaining and great value for money. Each section of the museum - the colliery village, the Georgian Farmhouse, the town and the farm - provides an insight into its particular period of history. All the areas are supported by knowledgeable and helpful " interpreters".
A highlight is a trip underground into an actual drift mine where the dangers of mining become all too apparent. The introduction to this visit describes the invention and importance of the Davy Lamp, a display of which is today's blip.
We also had a very detailed and entertaining description of the origins of printing from an enthusiastic "printer"
