aussie edible icons..iced vovo
This colourful little bikkie has been on grocers shelves since 1906, when the Iced VoVo name was trademarked.
Two strips of pink fondant parallel a stripe of strawberry jam and all are sprinkled with coconut on a biscuit base. My first introduction to an Iced VoVo was in a caravan in the Namib Desert (of all places) where an Aussie geo and partner rustled up the most amazing afternoon teas including scones and slices she cooked in a miniscule oven and always a plate of VoVos.
While a family favourite of some decades ago, only the larger supermarkets seemed to stock them now and at our local independent grocers, D at the check out got quite misty eyed talking about them!
They are sweet and very morish and of course having bought a packet to photograph, they will have to be finished.
Ho hum!
(They even got a mention in Kevin Rudd's 2007 Federal election speech and some bozo has apprently compared them (the biscuit and the name) to female genitalia! Honestly, what would the ladies of the CWA think about that idea. )
