Thank goodness it's Flower Friday

Are there any primary school teachers out there who can advise me on how to deal with a difficult seven year old?  He's a loving chap most of the time but he is struggling at school, particularly with "sums" and won't make eye contact if he can help it.  His dad is trying to help him understand his homework but he keeps giving throwaway answers or tries to avoid the subject completely.  He's very immature and obviously lacking confidence and not getting the help he needs at this critical stage. He reads the sports pages when he comes over on a Saturday without any trouble and goes into great detail about anything he finds interesting.
