Ceramic Art
Our friend/guide took us and another couple to the village of Atzompa, a which is known for its green pottery ( and also an archaeological site high on the mountain behind the town). The green pottery is easily found in many shops, and I've never been a great fan of it. So, all of us were greatly surprised and delighted to visit three ceramic artists who specialize in highly decorated figures created from various colors of clay found in different locations. They are fired but not glazed, retaining their natural earthy colors.
These dancers were without a doubt the most spectacular piece we saw, made by a family that specializes in filagree. The photo does not do justice to the reality, as you can't really see the tiny details of every leaf and flower. The artist said it took three months to complete.
