Moths
Some places have cows, some places have owls, some places .....
Hull and the East Riding have a thing about moths - it's all part of the Capital of Culture celebration. The link is that Amy Johnson, favourite daughter of Hull, and who held many long distance flying records in the 1930's, flew a Gipsy Moth.
This moth is across the road from our B&B. It shares a space with a painting by Fred Elwell. The Beverley Art Gallery has a lot of his paintings, and very fine they are too. Copies are to be found hanging from walls right across town. Both the Beverley Art Gallery and the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull are highly recommended.
The extra shows Spurn Point, where we have been today. A long walk, and fortunately a high tide of less than 7 metres so we were not cut off. I was last here decades ago, and it is all change. Over three years ago the sea destroyed part of the road to the lighthouse and lifeboat station, and there is no money to rebuild it. The sea wins around here. Fabulous walk, although you've got to like a bit of desolation ! In a few weeks lots of bird migrants will be dropping in, with others heading away. No Brexit will stop that avian urge.
