In their own words....

Dear Diary,

I have a friend who is very skilled at photoshop and he is creating digital collages of 19th century people in his town which includes their photograph and a piece of their writing.  I thought I would try it with some family photographs.  This is a digital collage of my grandmother at age 16 in 1906 and her Commonplace Book where she wrote down things that were important to her.

These pages included quotes by two of my favorite people, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Eleanor Roosevelt.  But it is the Longfellow poem, What is Age?, that inspired me to do my own digital collage.  It encourages us to see age as an opportunity and not a disability...I like that.

Today is also International Woman's Day.  Women should wear red today in solidarity.  Many women are participating in a one day "strike" to illustrate the important contributions women make to society.  Since I don't work I will just refrain from buying anything.  I was thinking about my dear Auntie this morning too.  She would have been leading the march dressed in red, I'm sure of it.  She taught me early in my life that women could be strong and independent.  I am who I am today due in large part to her influence.  March is also Women in History month.  It is an opportunity to reflect on the great contributions women have made throughout history.  So red today for a woman who has influenced you.  Their struggles are still our struggles.
