At night on the papal escape route

First I must admit to having a total thing for Rome's Castell San'Angelo - it's such an iconic building, so weird and impressive, full of nooks and secret corners and incredible rooms, and with such a long history. Hadrian's tomb, then a fort, then a papal fortress, a prison, and on and on....
More than almost any building in Rome it creates a sense of awe, history and mystery.

And in the summer they open it in the evening, with access to areas normally not open, small guided tours, a restaurant and concerts.

There's something about a monument at night - everything is quieter, and you feel a lot more alone as you wander. Often you are alone, and you cannot see the people wandering elsewhere in the dark.

This picture was taken from the guard's level of the papal escape wall - we got to walk halfway to the vatican both in and on it...
