Newbiggin Wells

Newbiggin is a linear village just outside Penrith with a long history. It lies close to the Putnam Fault, a junction between sandstone and limestone (nicely demonstrated in the local dry stone walls - middle bottom).
There is a line of springs and wells through the village and they have a long history of use. There's been neolithic finds locally, a Roman history and it was an old drove route (long and wide verges).
Here we have Sunbeams well (top left) for animals and Prospect well (top right) for human use.
The village lies in the Dacre parish and the bottom right shot is of St Andrew's church which is also supposed to have a well, now buried, but thought may connect to the old monastery that was on this site and referred to by Bede.
